They allow you to run the monitor at native resolution without scaling, but I can do that with normal display settings in MacOS as well. There is literally no way BetterDisplay can fix this. 5K displays are exactly 4x the resolution of 1440p (2x in height and 2x in width) so the scaling is picture perfect (where there was 1 pixel there is now 4). They built their UI to look great at 1440p on 27' displays. That's because Apple designs their UI for specific resolutions at specific screen sizes. 1440p/5K is what apple recommends for UI rendering at 27' size.ĪFAIK Better Display just lists a ton of different scaling options, but unless apple is willing to rewrite their entire UI scaling engine, there is no way to make a 27' 4K monitor look 'perfect' like a 5K is.

No setting in BetterDisplay actually makes it look better than I can do with the various scaling options built into MacOS. I feel like an idiot every time I see people praise BetterDisplay.

The core problem is that Mac OS doesn't have true UI scaling (literally, just draw the menu fonts and interface stuff larger) so we have to play games with the pixel resolution (make the dots bigger just so you can read stuff). The main point is that not every pixel in the video will now be displayed on the monitor. But if you do the scaling thing to run the computer at 2496x1404, then the video will be scaled down from 4K to that custom res (losing pixels in the process), and then that res is upscaled back up to 4K for display on the monitor. If you are running the computer at true 4K, then when you are playing the video fullscreen, every pixel of the video will be displayed on it's own pixel on the monitor. I mean, yes, there are 4K of pixels physically on the monitor, and all the them are displaying something, but from the computer side, the computer is only generating an image that is 2496x1404 which is only 42% the pixels as true 4K and then scaling that image to display it at 3840x2160 4K.įor example, let's say you have a camera video file that is exactly 4K 3840x2160 pixel size.

I was wondering the same thing as /u/Nice_Platypus but reading your description of what the software is doing, I don't think the display is actually displaying 4K. I know they want to sell Studio Displays and Pro Displays, but for many those displays simply aren't a viable option.

I just have one question? If this can be done with a third party app, why on earth does Apple not natively include this type of code in the system? it's SO much better than their native scaling. So grateful for the developer, to be honest, because it took what was a good experience with my new monitor, and made it a great experience. Got BetterDisplay, and after enabling near native HiDPI scaling - wow.what a difference. I also just got a new 32' 4K monitor, and while the native display scaling issue wasn't as bad as I first thought it would be, I began finding my eyes tiring rather easily when I was using my mac (I have both my Mac Studio and my gaming PC hooked up to both my monitors).
